I made this game in 1999, before I grew out of my edgy teen phase. or did I? It was posted on Newgrounds before the Portal system launched in 2000; I eventually uploaded it to the Portal in 2006 so people could vote on it and leave reviews.

This story has since been re-told with Pico’s School: Love Conquers All.

Pico was made in Flash 3, before the introduction of variables (or just about any code, for that matter). To simulate stored data, I weaved a complex web of movie clips that gave orders to the main game. Unfortunately, I wasn’t aware of frame labels, so all the commands referred to frame numbers, making things difficult to edit afterwards.

I loved the game!

It’s a bit difficult to play during some boss fights if you have a shitty touchpad like I do (to the point where I thought it might have been impossible to beat on the hardware I was playing it on), but I still had a lot of fun. I like challenging games and this one is challenging in kind of a similar way to some NES games.

My favorite part of the game was the final boss. So absurd, yet such a fun and challenging fight. What a great way to cap off this Newgrounds classic!

I also like how Pico isn’t supposed to be this all-good person. He is kind of an asshole at times if we’re being honest, and that makes him more interesting.

All in all, great game, 5 stars, would recommend to anyone who likes old Flash games.

Pico is a school kid who saves kids by shooting guns. Founder Tom Fulp in 1999 for the game Pico’s School. Pico’s school was created during the aftermath of the Columbine High School Massacre, but despite its controversial nature it quickly became a favorite at Newgrounds, eventually spawning its own collection and Newgrounds Holiday, Pico Day, which has been celebrated every April 30th.

Pico is a young boy with ginger hair, beige pants, green shirt and red shoes. He has white sclera with no pupils as a stylistic choice used throughout his series. He is an exceptional gunman and is usually seen dual wielding his weaponry. He also has tremendous skill in unarmed combat, seen in media such as Newgrounds Rumble and Pico’s Unloaded. His weapons of choice are automatic weapons such as the MAC-10, UZI or the M16 Assault Rifle. Pico is also hot-headed, often acting out in aggression.

Nene is an Asian girl, who first appeared in Nene Interactive Suicide in 1999. She is often known for her flirtatious attitude and her committing suicide, usually prompted by an outbreak of herpes.

In Pico’s School, she begs Pico to end her life, which the player may or may not do. In other movies, she is shown wielding knives to fight enemies, especially in House of 1000 Cats and Pico vs. Convict. She is also featured in a number of other games and movies, including Newgrounds Rumble, Pico Sim Date, and Pico vs. Überkids. As an image, Nene appears here and there on the Newgrounds website, like other Pico series characters. She was also the voting character in the Art Portal.

Darnell

Darnell is an African-American boy who goes to Pico’s school, and assists him during the various attacks the school randomly comes under. He is a pyromaniac, obsessed with fire and explosives. Darnell makes appearances in Darnell Plays with Fire and Pico vs. Überkids.

He also appears in various places on the site, such as the Audio Portal and the semi-permanent error message on the Magazine.

Pico 2

A recurring joke on Newgrounds is the fact that the original Pico’s School never had a sequel.

As early as 1999, Tom Fulp claimed to be working on a sequel in Flash 4, but it never materialized.[1] In mid-2000, he claimed that he was rebooting the project in Flash 5, and would include keyboard support.[2] Pico 2 Gameplay Demo is the lowest rated flash that Tom Fulp ever submitted. It is a very short sprite movie that shows a pixelated Pico shooting what appear to be Überkids. A game called «Pico 2» was jokingly submitted by a user named «BFK», and went on to receive the Underdog of the Week award. Pico 2 is listed on Mindchamber’s website as one of his projects. In the 2009 Tank Awards video, Tom Fulp joked about how he was not working on it. Later, in 2011, he put up a bogus link to the game on the BBS.[3]

On April 1, 2013, Clatform uploaded Pico’s School 2 with Tom Fulp credited as a co-author; as expected, it was a April’s Fools joke. However, there still is a very slight possibility that either Tom, Mindchamber, or some other Newgrounder might create an actual Pico’s School 2 in the future.

Though this is also likely a joke, the Kickstarter page for Friday Night Funkin’ says if they reach $5,000,000, they will put work into a remake of Pico’s School and a finished release of Pico’s School 2 in the base game of Friday Night Funkin’. [1]

4 different prototypes of Pico’s School 2 are available to Newgrounds Supporters. One is seen in the screenshots next to this, while the others aren’t officially documented.

Pico is a character depicted in a series of Flash based games created by Tom Fulp, founder of Newgrounds. Pico is one of three children (Nene and Darnell) created by Tom Fulp, and is still featured in the Newgrounds GUI and elsewhere throughout the site. He is Newgrounds’ official mascot.
