GemCraft — Frostborn Wrath — Talisman Rune Bonuses Guide

This guide explains the talisman rune bonuses, which are extremely powerful compared to the individual fragment bonuses, especially at medium wizard levels.

Guide to Talisman Rune Bonuses

Overview

This guide provides an explanation of the talisman rune bonuses. If you would like to figure out the secret of talisman runes by yourself do not go further into this guide!

Talisman Runes

During the way to Spiritforge, we sometimes find talismans with markings on the corners:

There are five kind of runes in total: four are shown in the title icon of this guide, and the fifth one is shown above.

Placing the fragments inside the talisman in a certain manner will activate two very, very powerful hidden bonuses: one grants extra starting mana, and the other one grants extra mana at the start of each wave.

The First Bonus

The first bonus (extra starting mana) concerns the placement of rune fragments in each row.

If a row of talisman contains 3 or more runes of the same kind, the lights at the two ends of this row will lit, indicating that this row will generate a rune bonus «+x% initial mana», where

x = 0.5 * (total rarity of fragments carrying the majority rune) * (1 or 1.2 or 1.4)

The final factor is determined by precisely how many fragments carry the majority rune: 1 if there are exactly 3 runes of the same kind, 1.2 if 4 of the same kind, and 1.4 if all fragments carry the same rune.

If multiple rows satisfies the rune condition, then the contribution is calculated for each row individually and then added together.

Although all of the fragments are carrying runes, there are no 3 runes of the same kind (only the 2nd and the 4th fragments share the same rune), and nothing happens.

This time we replaced the rightmost fragment so now we have 3 runes of the same kind (on 2nd, 4th and 5th fragment). The two end lights are now lit, indicating a bonus. The rarities of the fragments are 69, 49, 48, 29, 73, and the bonus is calculated as

0.5 * (49 + 29 + 73) = 75.5

And we will get a +76% (rounded) bonus of initial mana. Note how the calculation ignores the fragments that are not carrying the majority rune.

We replaced the center fragment so now we have 4 runes of the same kind (2nd to 5th fragment). Again the two end lights are lit. The rarities of the fragments are now 69, 49, 21, 29, 73, and the bonus is calculated as

0.5 * (49 + 21 + 29 + 73) * 1.2 = 103.2

And we will get a +103% (rounded) bonus of initial mana. Again the leftmost fragment does not participate in the calculation as it does not carry the same rune as others.

This bonus is applied to the initial mana after everything else:

mp = (300 + 7 * skill points + bonus from wizard levels) * (1 + x%)

Which means a good combination of fragments in multiple rows can directly boost the initial mp two or three fold. Depending on the strategy, this can either save you some skill points or make your starting gem one grade higher, and is extremely helpful for low wizard levels (i.e. 50-100).

The Second Bonus

The second bonus (extra mana per wave) concerns the placement of rune fragments in each column.

If a column of talisman contains 3 or more runes of different kind, the lights at the two ends of this column will lit, indicating that this column will generate a rune bonus «+x mana at the start of each wave», where

x = (total rarity of fragments carrying runes) * (1 or 1.2 or 1.4)

The final factor is determined by precisely how many kinds of runes there are: 1 if there are exactly 3 kinds of runes, 1.2 if 4 kinds, and 1.4 if all fragments carry completely different runes.

If multiple columns satisfies the rune condition, then the contribution is calculated for each column individually and then added together.

Keep in mind that the picture is actually for a column; it is rotated by 90 degrees for reading convenience.

There are only 2 kinds of runes (one from the 1st fragment, and the other from the 3rd, 4th and 5th fragments), and nothing happens(and no, «no runes» does not count toward a kind of rune). This would have triggered a row bonus if placed in rows (that being said, we can not change which edge a edge fragment can go to).

This time we replaced some fragments so now we have 3 kinds of runes (1st and 3rd, 4th, 5th fragment). The two end lights are now lit, indicating a bonus. The rarities of the fragments are 45, 49, 23, 22, 24, and the bonus is calculated as

(45 + 23 + 22 + 24) * 1 = 114

And we will get a +114 bonus mana at the start of each wave. Note how the calculation ignores the fragments that are not carrying runes. Compared to rows, the columns are more efficient at including more fragments in the bonuses; the rows only calculate fragments with the same rune, while the column calculates all fragments with runes, even if they do not contribute to new kinds of runes.

We replaced more fragments so now we have all 5 kind of runes. Again the two end lights are lit. The rarities of the fragments are now 45, 80, 48, 22, 24, and the bonus is calculated as

(45 + 80 + 48 + 22 + 24) * 1.4 = 306.6

And we will get a +307 (rounded) bonus mana at the start of each wave.

I’ve come to realize that I was doing my Talisman wrong. I was searching for traits I thought useful for the early game. After a bit of trial and error, I’ve come to see that the most important part of the Talisman is matching the symbols on the tiles themselves.

3+ different symbols in a column gives you +mana at the start of every new wave.
3+ identical symbols in a row gives you +initial mana percentage
(Corrected thank you Dragonmaster!)

Rarity of the individual tiles boosts the gains in wave mana or initial mana.

You will see the little white lights at end of row or column light up if you got a bonus. You can see the bonus as at the bottom of the summary.

Having a much larger starting pool, and getting those extra ticks of mana with every wave would have been crazy useful to early game progression. I didn’t make this connection until around level 80. My talisman was all +xp gear and hadn’t changed in forever. Just by swapping out two tiles and doing some moving/reshaping, I had +70% initial mana. Suddenly I had crazy amounts of mana, and ended up bumping my skills way up instead of saving as many points.

I highly recommend you use the Undo Changes button liberally to test the best combinations. Also if you accidently scrap a tile, Undo Changes will bring it back.

Screenshots of my current talisman. 2 rows with 3 matching symbols. 1 row with 4 matching symbols. 3 columns with 3 different symbols. +175% initial mana. +354 wave mana.

Note your skill assignment menu will still list you as having X amount of mana from skills. Thats true, but once you go into a Journey or Endurance, you’ll see your much larger starting pool.

1. Talisman are needed for huge boosts to damage, mana, mana farms, kills, high levels and everything ingame. Very important.
2. Shadow cores are needed to upgrade and change shapes of the above, Talisman. Very important.

* the above image shows Map A1, 2800+ cores per 3 minutes, 2 to 4 Talisman of 55+ quality.

Map setup* I have all the towers set on special and 99% of the specials are covered. Amps remain level 5. ONLY middle tower goes to 9 rest remain at 8 and is enough.

Skills setup* with skills 50 on seeker sense means more cores. it was around 45 x 5 min games to open all my trait tiles and also collect Talisman. only use yellow.

Traits setup* only change either top left adaptive carapace to 10 or giant domination to 10. else 12 everywhere you can handel.

* please note i am wizard level 600 and starting mana with the above setup is 45k hense i cant go for more traits or i will be dead.

** above gives you 2800 and 3 Talisman per 5 mins. best farm i know.

** the map setup is 90% same as the previous person who shared the image with us of this farm. HOWEVER i wanted a 20 second setup.

Can confirm as shown

But, how do you deal with shadows, that appear behind your front line? The gem range is not enough at this gem grade. Even I can’t cover the whole map with just this tower setup. Is this, why you don’t use Corrupted Banishment?

i dont use that as i cant handel it as sawms get through. if they do i dont think i can kill them.

Ah ok. But that’s why i had the walls (first link). Yes, it takes a little longer, but the rarity increase is worth it in a long shot.

Also, I wouldn’t recommend A4 for core farming. Only for fragments.
If you want really fast cores at this WL, go to W1 Journey. Set only Ritual to 12, max Seeker Sense, put a lot into Demolition and a few points in Armor Tearing. Nothing else
Call all Waves and bomb all the mobs with a G5 or G6 Armor gem away. Make sure, you have enough starting mana. So in doubt, don’t max the skills. Takes

20seconds for 1000-3000 cores. After unlocking the whole talisman, you get way to many cores even without Seeker Sense. So W1 Journey would be a one time thing. (I’ve bunked 1.5 millions over the time)

If you split Core and Fragment farm, you could get rid of Seeker Sense for A4. You have way more starting mana, even if you up one or two skills, could buy higher starting gems and you can handle a higher trait setup or speed up your run by calling waves earlier.

Strenght in Numbers is the next trait, you should take. The armor is minimal compared to their natural armor. Just hover over wave 60 or 80 and look at the numbers.

The rough idea of what you say is definitly true.

Thanks to Vorgozz, Saennir, Manabender, Blood and Awesome8Dude for corrections on a few achievements, as well as everyone on the GemCraft Discord server who helped figured out these achievements — for the most part, I merely compiled them!

The first two are (or at least were, at the time of making this guide) not available yet. The dev needs to release some more content for those.

To instantly drop a gem into your inventory, hover over it and press tab.

These are not hidden achievements but possibly impossible achievements, unless someone knows something i don’t.

Have 70 fields lit in trial mode — there are only 69 trial modes 🙁

The achievements to break open 3 & 4 tombs — i can only find 2 on a single map.

Quicksave- says to instantly drop a gem into your inventory. Not sure exactly what this means but i have dropped and moved a gem into my inventory every way i can think of and i haven’t unlocked it.

Again it is possible i am missing something so if you know how to get any of these please share!
